CORTISOL/ADRENAL TESTING

Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands and is regulated by the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus, a part of the brain. Cortisol is a critical hormone that helps to break down fat and protein. The level of cortisol in the body stimulates liver glucose production and helps to maintain blood pressure and regulate the immune system affecting inflammation. It also helps us react to physical and emotional stress.

High levels of cortisol may be caused by Cushing Syndrome, a relatively rare disorder that could result from taking glucocorticoid-steroids for a prolonged period or an adrenal tumor. Addison’s disease (primary or secondary), or adrenal insufficiency, cause low levels of cortisol and may be a result of an autoimmune response to the adrenal glands or an adrenal tumor. 70% of primary adrenal insufficiency is caused by an autoimmune process that ultimately destroys the adrenal cortex.

Free cortisol, which is unbound to a protein, is found in the urine and in the saliva. At BodySymmetry MD, our Saliva Cortisol Test is the least invasive way to measure the level of cortisol in the body. Cortisol levels normally fluctuate throughout the day, with levels being highest in the morning and lowest after midnight. However, this test is an easy way for you to monitor your daily cortisol levels.

FOOD SENSITIVITY TESTING

Our Food Sensitivity Test uses both hair and saliva samples to determine what foods your body may be sensitive to.

Your hair is like a food journal— it keeps track of everything you digest and breathe. This information is stored in the hair follicle and hair shaft and includes a record of items such as:

  • Lupine
  • Most common allergens: cow’s milk, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, shellfish, wheat, soy, fish
  • Mollusks
  • Mustard, sesame, celery and products thereof
  • Nicotine and smog
  • Sulfur dioxide
  • Supplements and nutritional items

Your saliva is proven to tell the story of toxins (such as food colors, additives, preservatives, emulsifiers, stabilizers, thickeners and gelling agents) and other foreign substances in your food. Because your body’s immune system produces measurable antibodies that work in your saliva to fight off these harmful substances, we can use your saliva to tell what you are and are not sensitive to.

NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCY TESTING

Our Nutrition Test will indicate which of the key vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and amino acids the body is not absorbing properly from your food and/or supplements. This test monitors over 80 items from this list; however, the report does not show results for all 80 plus items. Instead, only the items that exceed the threshold set by the lab will be on the report. This means only the items you need to monitor will be included in the report. Additionally, unlike blood testing, this test will not provide you with a physical measurement of the amount of nutrients in the body. Test results will be reported 7-10 days after the saliva sample has been received at the lab.

INBODY COMPOSITION SCAN

The InBody Composition Scan uses bioelectrical impedance to measure your percentage of body fat, basal metabolic rate, segmental muscle balance and body composition history. The bioelectrical impedance, or electrical current, that is used is extremely low, cannot be felt and is not harmful to the body.

We use the InBody Scan in conjunction with our weight loss and muscle building programs. The scan has the ability to break down the body’s composition into the number of pounds of muscle, fat, intracellular water and extracellular water. This information is extremely useful when trying to lose fat and gain muscle.

The InBody Scan is not appropriate for people with artificial electrical implants such as defibrillators or pacemakers. We do not recommend pregnant women to be tested. Note: breast implants will be calculated as body fat; however, this will remain a constant between body scans so it will not impact the accuracy of your results.

Your first InBody Scan is free and a follow up scan is only $30. Call our office today to find out more and make your first InBody Scan appointment.
